A Brief history of “Café” in my life:
Ever since I was a little girl my mother and I would sit at the kitchen table or the restaurant and discuss how to “solve the problems of the universe”. So I have come to believe, after years of kitchen table processing, that a great number of our challenges can be addressed over three essential ingredients:
1. cup of tea
2. heart felt conversation
3. a ream of white paper and colored pens
These ingredients are not the problem solving gold mine of the universe, but it is a great place to start. And change happens through starting. From the space of open, caring conversation, stories can be told, ideas can be formed, plans can be made, laughter can be heard, tears can be shed and possibilities can come into clear view.
When I was child, and my mentor and I would got to the museum, one of the highlights of the day was going to the museum café to discuss the art, break out our sketch books and to order whatever I wanted that day. Tea and crumpets of course.
Early in her life, she said Denny’s was her “studio” and that for a 25. cup of coffee she could sketch all day the things she was going to create one day.
When I was in my twenties living in San Francisco, stomping down city streets in my red cowgirl boots, my favorite thing in the whole world was to go to the café with my journal and drink Latte’s and sketch. Who knew that over ten+ years later I would begin to see clients at those same café’s that I grew up in? And then to create “café” in as a part of my art studio and classroom through always making sure there was a table, two chairs, two cups of tea and plenty of art supplies on hand.
So, I come from a long line of café dwelling experiences! And it is in the spirit of heartful conversation that I invite others to join me for a cup of tea. Most of my breakthroughs happen at that café table or at the easel. And yes, a fair amount from lounging on a red coach surrounded by fluffy pillows.
