Dear Citizens of the United States of America,
It is important for us to know what is happening to the indigenous people of the United States. Stop. Look. Research. Respond.
Yesterday, police from five states attacked the people of Standing Rock, shot into crowds, killed a horse, arrested protestors in ceremony and are a part of violating a treaty from 1851. Ordered by the powers that be. Why is our US government not putting a stop to this? Big business.
The genocidal behavior we have exhibited towards the indigenous peoples of this country has been cruel, astonishing, systemic, and short-sighted. I am writing because many still do not know and because it is being suppressed by the media.
Often, historically, if the US could not have what we wanted when we wanted it, we just took it by force. We made deals we didn’t honor, deals we knew could not be upheld by those we made them with, and took the better part for ourselves. And we called America great. This land IS great – our behavior is not great at all! To make deals to claim land that wasn’t claimed, in the way we practice marking territory, is not just, and therefore many of the citizens of the US consider this occupied territory.
I am one of the people who knows/feels/lives that this is occupied territory. My ancestors were those who came here seeking a better life for themselves, and no one who migrated to this country is free of this story. This isn’t about shaming our being here, but instead asking, when is the spirit of collaboration we once held as an idea going to be honored? No where in sight.
America will never be destroyed from the outside.
If we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves.
~ Abraham Lincoln
That said, what now? What now, when we are allowing events like the injustice of the Dakota Access pipeline to happen? And so many still close their eyes and turn their heads. LET’S NOT LOOK AWAY!!! It’s time to LOOK. You can be a part of this conversation.
Almost all lands globally have been at one time or another taken from someone by force. At the end of the day, that doesn’t make the pattern necessary to continue, nor does it condone continued patterns of “power over” politics.
Australia and Canada have taken steps to repair their relationship with the indigenous peoples of those lands, yet we have not. How can we really consider ourselves a progressive nation when we won’t acknowledge the backs of those who we built this nation upon?
To think we will find peace and progress in America without first apologizing to the ancestors of this territory is a mistake. Energy is real and is not some new age concept – everything is made of energy and we carry a collective injustice in our very lands, bodies and hearts. We continue to build on bones that have not been given justice, yet pretend there is nothing there. Those who listen know the truth. And, yet bulldozers clear sacred sites. What is happening here? Can you see it?
“In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”
~ Iroquois saying
An era of forgiveness is called for, and yet we have been continuing down the same line of behavior we started with. Divide. Conquer. Dominate. Own. Claim. The Native tribes of the US are the stewards of this land and know we cannot own it in any integrity.
These past few years, months and weeks with Standing Rock I have imagined the Elders speaking to each other about what is happening. They always knew.
“When all the trees have been cut down,
when all the animals have been hunted,
when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe,
only then will you discover you cannot eat money.”
~ Cree saying
This is bigger than a Native issue, a water issue, or a big business issue. This is about the kind of country we are going to become in the future, the country of the next seven generations. Our politicians ask what kind of country we are, but do not speak for those who know what kind of country we already are. That the very soul of our nation is filled with corruption, and will continue to be as long as we do not make amends and cease this warrior behavior against people and earth.
In any relationship in which we desire workability, if we make a mistake, we need to know how to apologize, and how to change our behavior in the future. We don’t act as if we are in relationship with one another, with earth, and with the first nation peoples. Instead, we act like dictators – repeating the same mistakes, which prevent the creation of a nation of peace.
I grieve America.
This is my story about this story. If you don’t take the time to really look into this issue yourself before you comment and want to quote to me why this isn’t so – I have read those comments on other posts and have heard the opposition. Just go somewhere else and justify this behavior. Meanwhile we shall kill ourselves off slowly through the poisoned water we consume, create, bottle and sell back to the people who can’t afford it.
I continue to make art about it. To speak about it. To write about it. To donate. To sign petitions and contact the White House.
“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together. All things connect.”
~ Chief Seattle
Who am I? First I am an artist who hears the cries of the world. That is part of my sacred assignment, and to call others to listen and not turn away from the questions that love asks. I am Russian & Scandinavian with indigenous roots to my own motherlands, and I belong to earth like all of you do. I loved seeing how the indigenous Saami of Scandinavia came to stand with Standing Rock, because they too are having these same challenges at home. The path of the reindeer has been broken in the seeking of resources of land that was considered not worth living on. Sound familiar? This is a global genocidal behavior. Not just US. But since I live here, I shall not go to sleep. Working with Native Americans is something I have done almost all of my life. I was smudged before I was even baptised. Native Elders have been schooling me in ceremony and faith and there hasn’t been a moment when I was not under the teaching of a Native Elder since my early twenties. It is part of my walk is this life to walk with the brothers and sisters of this territory and heal together.
“Law enforcement from at least five states (North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming, Nebraska) were present today through EMAC, the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. This law was passed by the Bill Clinton administration and allows states to share law enforcement forces during emergencies. It is intended for natural disasters and has only been used twice for protests; once in the summer of 2015 during the demonstrations in Baltimore and here on the Standing Rock Reservation.”
Here is what the White House has to say about the project in the petition in case you are not aware of the issue:
“The Dakota Access pipeline is set to be constructed near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, crossing under the Missouri River which is the only source of water to the reservation. The pipeline is planned to transport approximately 470,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The potential of oil leaks would contaminate the only source of water for the reservation…an oil leak from a separate pipeline in North Dakota was discovered (8/15/16) to have leaked over 500 barrels of oil since the leak began on July 19, 2016. You can read the article here: http://bit.ly/2aVm5cv. A leak like this from the Dakota Access pipeline would leave the Standing Rock Sioux without any clean water.”
And to think this is about that one water source, that one tribe, that one reservation is the ignorance that is ruining our natural resources. More tribes from more states and countries have gathered around this topic than anyone in history like this – they know this is not an isolated situation, but is the micro of the macro.
“It is time to honor Native Americans and say to the world that we are
grateful for you, your sacrifice, and the way you are still trying to take care
of Mother Earth”
~ Carmen Baraka, Spirit Warrior, Apache/Peruvian.
Last year, our community of Intentional Creativity went to the United Nations CSW for the 4th year. One of our panel speakers was teacher and circle leader, Carmen Baraka. I have worked with Carmen in the Intentional Creativity Movement for the past 6 years. She spoke on the plight of Native women and girls situations on the reservation and asked for an apology. The line of people around the world to speak to her afterward – told her – they had no idea what Native peoples of the US were facing, never heard of it. She recently wrote President Obama to ask for this apology. She also with our community, formed a gathering where we experienced smudging – as well as smudging the 193 member state flags.
“This is a painful moment in time, and so profound. I wonder if people realize that how we act and react to this atrocity will set a precedent on the many land and resource takeovers that are planned by corporations, including our National parks, the Grand Canyon, private companies want to buy land that past presidents saved to be preserved for us all. Well, all these things are waiting just under the surface…Why is no one asking how is it that five state’s National Guard millions of dollars of tax payer money are going to protect a private company? When so many watch and so few speak, we invite tyranny! May we stand together as ONE! ~ Carmen Baraka, Spirit Warrior, Apache/Peruvian.
If we go down, I will stay awake, watching. We must continue to watch, to act, and to not shut down our feelings. We must practice as a global community the energy of witness and activist. The trees, the oceans, the waters, the creatures, all respond to OUR presence, our intentions. So even as we stand, we shall love.
AHO to unreasonable love and healing
even in the face of disaster and cruelty.

Hold on to what is good,
Even if it’s a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe,
Even if it’s a tree that stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do,
Even if it’s a long way from here.
Hold on to your life,
Even if it’s easier to let go.
Hold on to my hand,
Even if someday I’ll be gone away from you.
ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO SUPPORT and STAND with STANDING ROCK in STOPPING the DAKOTA ACCESS Pipeline
Together we must BELIEVE and have FAITH that our efforts matter and can make an impact.
There is a lot to be done and it is hard to know how to take and make impactful action. We are creating a weaving of social justice actions and energy actions across the web and the fabric of creation. Note: This list was created from what we could find – it can be added to and subtracted from as we learn more. You must go where you feel called – just choose a few things and do them each day. Consider this an unending vigil until justice is served.
Social Media Actions – Sharing the Story
Research for yourself and form your opinion before you act. Know what is happening.
Share #NoDAPL images, posts, stories videos like wildfire. JUST SHARE. #StandingwithStandingRock
Talk about this with your community, create your own posts and stories – how do you feel? Bring your EMOTION into this. Share other people’s posts and stories that inspire you.
IF you have a ‘following’ on fb. Place a fb ad between $25-100 to reach your community so people are informed.
If you have connections, in the news and media reach out to them an ask them to share.
If you are a part of a circle or group on fb, share there too.
Imagine this as a weaving of truth and justice moving through the real matrix of energy that exists stronger than any of the actions that create harm to earth and people.
Don’t stop believing that we can make this change and raise awareness. Let’s not turn away. Be engaged.
Energy Actions – Bringing your LOVE and TRUTH to the cause
Pray. Create Ceremony. Take images of you and your community Standing with Standing Rock. Ask Creator. Give love to Earth and ask for Earth Wisdom to rise up like the Buffalo. Pray for Justice. Hold circles. Hold Red Thread Circles and talk about this with your community. Create concentrated prayer times. Chant. Believe.
Create art about your emotional experience and truth. Share it. Put your intention into it. Pray with paint and poetry and song.
Add items to your altar stating they are on behalf of water.
Spend time in nature, honor the earth, be with creation.
Ask for insight, personally and collectively. Speak your own truths.
REMEMBER THAT INTENTION IS REAL. Every post, every email, every call, every prayer contributes to the weave. WE MUST BELIEVE this right now as we always have, but bringing it into form in new ways right now.
By staying up to date on this (along with the US Election) you can ensure that you have your eyes open. Don’t accept the truth of others, form your own truths through LOOKING and FEELING and trying to see past the real and illusionary smokescreens. If you are a sensitive and this is too much – just light a candle an ask to be with, this in a new way that is manageable to your energy. We are watching. We are the witnesses. We are the stewards of the earth and are here together to ensure safety for the next seven generations. If we let them poison our water, no one is safe. Everyone actually knows this. And yet we often take the stand that this is not our issue. This is our life.

I have created this list from my finding to support our communities in taking informed actions. I have been looking everywhere for the EXACT right and focused actions and this is what I have found. Please help us find out if there is more we can do if you come across this post.
As for us, our communities of intentional creatives will pray in paint and poetry. And take actions as called above.
The image I am working with in my heart is a weaving – a blanket – a fabric of creation – that each of us is strengthening together – each action contributing to the healing that is so needed.
