Intimate Garment of Air
Traveling down your hurried road
to somewhere very important
yet unrelated to soul
The softest green wind
brushes your cheek
You pause, startled
You look around
there is no one
yet you felt someone
some…thing…move
Where did it come from?
You think
you are going to be late
so you rush on
to the next destination
which seemed so essential
but now you can’t find
the reason why
and as usual
you are early
so you have to wait
All day
The feeling will not let you loose
of the green wind message
whispering
But what?
Half way through the night
when all is feathered down
you creep to the window
and open it,
letting the night in
This is an invitation
You lay awake now, waiting
for what you felt this morning
The thought comes to you:
There is something
I am not seeing
Someone I am not being
Who is it?
Who is here?
Sleep takes you softly now
sweetly even,
into the tenderness of night
The light comes in
And you are awakened
by the coral mist face of morning
pressing itself through the screen
The morning
is in the room with you
touching your face
This feeling is so beautiful
that the contrast
to the hashing out of your days
causes your chest to coil inward
compressing pressing in
holding back
Then finally
with a big breath you exhale loudly
you wake the neighborhood
half cry half gasp
Houses away,
mothers reach to comfort sleeping children
lovers reach for thighs
husbands think to put on the coffee
wives say their prayers
dogs yawn, kitties stretch
Today, you breathed the world awake
This. This. This.
But
what
is
This?
You don’t know.
Yet you know
Slowly you step
toward the waiting window
Remove your garment
as if removing a past life
letting it fall to the floor,
soundless
You stand naked
in the pale peach
This is the window
that faces the garden
that has green plants
pressing against it
The window
that made you want to live here
Remember?
You think
These are the moments
which weave my life together
How can I not see the pattern?
Then you see the pattern.
The whole pattern even just a flash
Whether you notice or not
the idea that
all of this beauty happens
without you making it happen
makes you wonder…
What would be different if
all of this happened
With you?
Then
the morning light
wraps you in a garment
of the softest green wind
A garment
the color of pale green leaves
through silver screen
the color of moss
that has lived on river rock
the color of river
that has flowed forever
the color of forever
wrapped around you
Inhabiting this garment
You live your life
In just the space of one day
You re-membered a part of you
Enough of you
to carry on
