Luke 1:26-38 At that time the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace: the…
It is Spring Eve, she said to all the Doubts.
Gather around! All of you.
One by one, she called their names aloud:
Like little mice in a fairy tale gone wrong
they congregated at the hem of her garment.
With kindness and fierceness in her voice,
She continued to call on all that prevents:
Gather around! All of you!
and you too, yes you! Mediocrity. Cynicism.
and Just Joking. And you!
Unwilling to change. Unwilling to look.
Unwilling to see what is needed.
Unwilling to Hope.
Why were we commanded to rest? In a world that’s gone mad, I think it is pretty obvious what happens when folks don’t get enough rest. I have often thought to myself, how can we not covet, steal and kill if we do not rest? Maybe Creator or Mother and Father Divine, put it there for a reason. You think? Even our cattle are not supposed to work. Around Cosmic Cowgirls if we don’t have a workshop, we don’t e-mail amongst ourselves on the weekends mostly, and we don’t work unless we absolutely have to – and we put our horses out into the meadow. There is a decency in stopping working — and we need it.
Call a circle right before dinner to give thanks. Then once you are seated, take gentle control. and invite each person to share what they are grateful for as you all eat dinner. You start, and have one person next to you who is ready to share and is not surprised about this. (ignore any grumbling and forge ahead, it is so much more interesting than sports, or the weather or little Sally’s gymnastic class)
My ideas are worth exploring
and my creative acts are sacred, worthwhile and valuable.
I answer the call to create
without feeling I am taking away from something or someone.
I know that I have something unique to say and create,
that is only mine to express and so it is original.
Surrendering the life we didn’t up having is a messy process. It requires us to look deeply at how we got where we are and what our choices are that have led us to this place. We are most likely hard on ourselves for all the “mistakes” and even torture ourselves further by telling ourselves that there are no mistakes.
I believe there are mistakes and that it is ok to admit that.
Alice Walker is known throughout the world as not only a great writer but an activist and a woman who shares the inner turmoil and outer struggles of her life. Readers admire her ability to bare her heart and soul, but to also speak out about the world as she sees it, often becoming a catalyst for change.
The day when I was called forth from the sleep of making a living into the wake of making a life worth living, so much light and perception came that I almost lost my balance for the radiance of it. It wasn’t my light – I was just allowed to view it as Mama Mary pulled back the beaded curtain long enough for me to see and realize I had work to do here. I was called, but to what…I didn’t have yet words for the “what”.
magine a woman who trusts and respects herself.
A woman who listens to her needs and desires.
Who meets them with tenderness and grace.
Imagine a woman who acknowledges the past’s influence on the present.
A woman who has walked through her past.
Who has healed into the present.
Every single one of us has a calling.
Answering that calling is real medicine…while not answering often leads to illness and sorrow. Or even to the worse kind of illness: irrelevance…invisibility…listlessness…restlessness….despair…
Now you and I know that just because we begin to listen and answer we will not be instantly whole and completely well! Poets, artists and musicians are evidence that following the call, however illuminating to the soul, does not mean miracle healing. No. But, there is a very palpable experience of healing for those of us who answer. As Martha Graham in a letter to Agnes De Mille says so well:
“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action…”
